Mercury analysers are now an essential tool for all analytical laboratories as mercury which is extremely toxic to humans is a major contaminant throughout our environment. The PSA 10.025 Millennium Merlin mercury analyser is designed specifically for the analysis of mercury in all types of samples. The analyser combines the advantages of vapour generation techniques which removes most chemical interferences with the sensitivity and selectivity of atomic fluorescence spectrometry which allows mercury analysis down to sub ppt detection limits with 107x linearity.

The PSA 10.035 Millennium Merlin 1631 was developed for the determination of mercury at low levels and specifically to be compliant with EPA Method 1631 for mercury in drinking water. The instrument is essentially the same as the PSA 10.025 Millennium Merlin but with the inclusion of a gold trap prior to the detection step. The system uses continuous flow vapour generation, but the generated mercury vapour is passed over a gold trap where the mercury is preconcentrated.

The 10.045 Millennium Merlin Cold Vapor AAS System was developed to be compliant with EPA Cold Vapor methods stipulating the use of atomic absorption for the determination of mercury at low levels. The system is based on continuous flow generation but utilises atomic absorption as the detection method. Detection levels in sub ppt levels are readily available.

The PSA 10.525 Sir Galahad analyser is specifically designed for measuring mercury in gaseous samples at both online and offline installations. Sampling is via a dual purge and trap arrangement incorporating specific Amasil® traps operating in either a continuous or remote operation. The analyser complies with both ISO 6978:2 and ASTM 6350-98 methods for measuring mercury in natural gas.

The PSA 10.570 UV Cracker utilizes the energy from a low pressure mercury lamp to enhance the rate of certain reactions. This allows reaction times to be reduced from 30 minutes to 1 minute, so allowing reactions to be carried out online. This can either be for the online determination of total mercury or for post column derivitisation in the speciation analysis of mercury or arsenic using atomic fluorescence.

This system vaporises the condensate sample into an argon stream over a heated Amasil® trap. The mercury and mercury compounds are retained in the trap and the hydrocarbons vented to waste. The PSA 50.042 Thermogram consists of a two-stage tubular oven which is used, coupled to a PSA 10.025 Millennium Merlin. Small masses of sample are placed in a sample boat in the first part of the oven which is temperature controlled between ambient and 600°C. An alternative method of speciating mercury in solid samples is thermal desorption with atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (TD-AFS).
